About
As part of the project to construct a railway network during the Austro-Hungarian rule, the Eastern Narrow-Gauge Railway was inaugurated in 1906, connecting Sarajevo with the eastern regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina over a length of 161.5 km.
In the same year, a building in the Alpine romantic style of Austro-Hungarian architecture was constructed at the Bistrik railway station. Alongside the station, facilities such as a buffet, manager's building, freight storage, embankment, tunnel, and bridge were built.
The Eastern Narrow-Gauge Railway ceased operation in 1973, and the Bistrik station lost its function after the famous Ćiro train, celebrated in the partisan film “Walter Defends Sarajevo,” stopped running.
Over the following decades, the building suffered from war damage and inadequate construction interventions.
The former administrative building and the covered platform area are currently used as residential units, while the rest of the complex remains in ruins. Instead of the former railway, the city's bypass road now passes alongside the Bistrik station building.
In 2006, the old Bistrik railway station building was declared a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Despite its current state of disrepair, it represents an architectural and historical heritage of the Austro-Hungarian period in Sarajevo. Efforts to restore and preserve this significant site would contribute to the city's cultural landscape and commemorate its railway history.
