Established in 1961 under the name “Museum of Literature,” this cultural institution underwent further expansion a decade later to encompass the rich realm of performing arts in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). With a primary focus on collecting, preserving, and presenting artifacts that chronicle the development of literary and performing arts history in BiH, this museum stands as a testament to the cultural heritage of the region.
Located in the heart of Sarajevo, the museum resides within a captivating old family house, originally constructed in the mid-19th century. This architectural gem holds immense cultural and historical significance, having been recognized as a cherished monument.
Initially, the house belonged to the Skarić family before passing into the ownership of the Despić family, who eventually bequeathed both the property and the adjacent Despić House to the city of Sarajevo. Presently, the Despić House functions as an annex of the Museum of Sarajevo, further enriching the cultural offerings of the institution.
With an impressive collection encompassing 67 literary collections and 17 theater-related collections, the museum boasts over 20,000 diverse and captivating items. These holdings serve as a treasure trove for researchers, enthusiasts, and visitors seeking to explore the rich literary and performing arts heritage of BiH.
Among the notable permanent exhibits are the Study Room of Silvije Strahimir Kranjčević and the Bosnian Rooms dedicated to Petar Kočić, Hasan Kikić, and Isak Samokovlija. These spaces provide immersive experiences, offering visitors a glimpse into the personal realms of these influential literary figures, showcasing their works, personal effects, and the cultural context in which they thrived.
Additionally, the ground floor of the museum, known as the Mak Gallery, has been serving as an exhibition space since 1992. This dynamic area provides a platform for contemporary artists and performers to showcase their creative expressions, further contributing to the vibrant cultural scene of Sarajevo.
Through its dedication to literature and the performing arts, this museum stands as a cultural beacon, celebrating the diverse artistic achievements of BiH and preserving its rich heritage for present and future generations.
