The significance of the indigenous music genre called sevdalinka for the development of Bosnian-Herzegovinian cultural heritage was officially recognized with the opening of a permanent museum exhibition at the House of Sevdah Art. The initiative to restore the Veliki Dair, where the House of Sevdah Art is located, was undertaken by the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Sarajevo Canton. The reconstruction of this demanding facility lasted for a full eight months, and on May 8, 2008, the House of Sevdah was officially inaugurated as part of the Days of Sarajevo Canton 2008 event.
The House of Sevdah Art is situated in the heart of Sarajevo's Baščaršija and encompasses a total of 270 square meters of enclosed space, including an inner central courtyard measuring 144 square meters. This arrangement creates a unique composition and ambient unity.
The interior space is designed to take visitors through a historical depiction of the development of sevdalinka, from its origins to contemporary content, such as multimedia areas dedicated to composers, performers, and sevdalinka legends. Part of the space is designated for organizing thematic, scientific, and professional events dedicated to sevdalinka, and each thematic room is equipped with multimedia, audio-visual content where visitors can listen to sevdalinka songs and watch related video materials.
A section of the House of Sevdah Art houses a library and bookstore containing archival materials and publications that offer a historical overview of the development of Bosnian-Herzegovinian sevdalinka. The exhibition exhibits range from awards, musical instruments, bilingual descriptions of each exhibit, to information about composers, performers, musicians, musical catalogs, posters, archives, and more. In addition to all these contents, there is also a Sevdah Coffee Corner – a space where visitors can sit and enjoy authentic Bosnian coffee.
